Thyroidectomy in Lucknow

Pankaj ENT Hospital offers Thyroidectomy in Lucknow, led by ENT surgeons with over 30 years of head and neck surgical experience.

Our NABH-accredited facility performs total, partial, and near-total thyroid removal for cancer, goitre, hyperthyroidism, and suspicious nodules, supported by 24/7 post-operative care and cashless insurance options.

What Is a Thyroidectomy?

A thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of your neck. It produces hormones that control your metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and energy levels.

When the thyroid develops a problem that does not respond to medication or other treatments, surgery becomes necessary.

When Do You Need a Thyroidectomy?

Your ENT specialist will recommend thyroidectomy if you have:

Thyroid cancer: removal of the gland stops the spread of cancerous cells.
Hyperthyroidism: an overactive thyroid producing excess hormones, not controlled by medication.
Goitre: an enlarged thyroid gland causing breathing or swallowing difficulty.
Thyroid nodules: lumps in the thyroid that are suspicious or growing.
Graves' disease: an autoimmune disorder causing severe overactivity of the thyroid.
Compressive symptoms: when the enlarged gland presses on your windpipe or food pipe.

If you notice a lump in your neck, difficulty swallowing, a change in your voice, or persistent throat discomfort, consult our specialists without delay.

Types of Thyroidectomy

If you notice a lump in your neck, difficulty swallowing, a change in your voice, or persistent throat discomfort, consult our specialists without delay.

Total Thyroidectomy: complete removal of the thyroid gland; recommended for thyroid cancer or severe bilateral disease
Hemithyroidectomy (Lobectomy): removal of one lobe of the thyroid; used when disease affects only one side
Subtotal Thyroidectomy: removal of most of the thyroid, leaving a small portion; often done for hyperthyroidism
Near-Total Thyroidectomy: removal of almost all thyroid tissue while preserving a very small remnant

Your surgeon will explain which type is right for you based on your test reports and medical history.

Thyroidectomy Process

From your first consultation to full recovery, here is what to expect at each stage.

Before Surgery

Your surgical team will guide you through every step of preparation:

Blood tests and imaging: You will undergo routine bloodwork, thyroid function tests, and a neck ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis and help your surgeon plan the procedure accurately.
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC): A small biopsy sample is taken from the thyroid to check for malignancy, which guides whether partial or total removal is recommended.
Voice assessment: Your surgeon checks the function of your vocal cords before surgery to establish a clear baseline, allowing prompt identification and management of any postoperative changes.
Medication review: Inform your doctor of all medications you take, especially blood thinners, supplements, and herbal remedies, as some may need to be paused before surgery.
Fasting: You will be asked to stop eating and drinking for several hours before the procedure, which is essential to ensure your safety during general anaesthesia.

During Surgery

Thyroidectomy is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes one to two hours.

Anaesthesia: You receive general anaesthesia administered by a qualified anaesthesia team, so you remain fully asleep and pain-free throughout the entire procedure from start to finish.
Incision: The surgeon makes a small, neat incision at the base of your neck, positioned carefully within a natural skin crease so the eventual scar heals as discreetly as possible.
Gland removal: The thyroid (or the relevant portion) is carefully separated from the parathyroid glands and the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which controls your voice, and then removed with precision.
Closure: The incision is closed with sutures or surgical clips, and a small drain may be temporarily placed to allow any fluid to drain during the first day of recovery.

Most patients stay in hospital for one to two nights, depending on the type of procedure.

Recovery After Thyroidectomy

Recovery happens in two stages: careful monitoring in hospital, followed by guided healing at home.

In Hospital

Calcium and bleeding checks: You will be continuously monitored for calcium levels and any signs of bleeding, as both are critical in the first 24 hours following thyroid surgery.
Voice evaluation: Your voice will be carefully evaluated after surgery to confirm the recurrent laryngeal nerve is functioning normally, with prompt intervention available if any concerns arise.
Drain removal: If a small surgical drain was placed during the procedure, it will be gently removed within 24 hours, typically before you are discharged from the hospital.

At Home

Rest and activity: Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise for two to three weeks after surgery, allowing the surgical site to heal properly without unnecessary strain or tension.
Wound care: Keep the incision area clean and completely dry, following your surgeon's specific instructions for washing, dressing changes, and what to watch for as healing progresses.
Follow-up visits: Attend all follow-up appointments as advised, as they are essential for monitoring your recovery, checking hormone levels, and accurately adjusting any prescribed medication doses.
Medication adherence: Take all prescribed medications, including thyroid hormone replacement if the full gland was removed, exactly as directed and without interruption, even when you feel completely well.

Most patients return to normal daily activities within one to two weeks, with full recovery in three to four weeks.

Thyroid Hormone Replacement After Surgery

Regular blood tests will help your doctor adjust the dosage to keep your hormone levels stable.

This is a straightforward, well-established treatment. With the right dose, you live a completely normal life after a total thyroidectomy.

FAQs

Will I need to take medication for the rest of my life after a total thyroidectomy?

Yes, if your entire thyroid gland is removed, you will need to take daily thyroid hormone replacement tablets (thyroxine) for life. Your doctor will monitor your hormone levels through periodic blood tests and adjust your dose as needed. Most patients manage this well and live a completely normal, active life.

How long does it take to recover from a thyroidectomy?

Most patients return to light daily activities within one to two weeks. Full recovery, including return to physical work or exercise, takes about three to four weeks. Your surgeon will give you specific guidance based on your type of surgery and overall health.

Will thyroidectomy leave a visible scar?

The incision is made at the base of the neck and is typically small. With proper wound care and healing, the scar fades significantly over time. Your surgical team will advise you on scar care after the procedure.

What happens to my voice after thyroidectomy?

Temporary hoarseness or weakness may occur after thyroidectomy because the nerves that control the vocal cords run close to the thyroid gland. In most cases, this resolves within a few weeks. Permanent voice change is uncommon and is minimised when surgery is performed by an experienced ENT surgeon who carefully identifies and protects these nerves.
